Purpose : To implement an activity to acquaint health professional students, including physical therapy students, with the concepts of IPE and place them in a position to work with other health care students to improve the care of a simulated patient through a case study.Description : A cross-disciplinary IPE Task Force developed a multi-pronged 2-hour program for health care students on campus. Students involved in the program were from the following disciplines: athletic training, diagnostic medical sonography, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy, public health, respiratory care, social work, health science and sports science. The program included the following elements: 1. an oral presentation to provide an introduction to the concept of IPE and IPEC competencies along with a written handout to highlight the educational requirements and at least one professional organization for each participating profession; 2. a workshop session in which 40 groups of 10 students under the guidance of a volunteer faculty facilitator reviewed a patient case developed to highlight the need for interdisciplinary care; 3. a debriefing session that allowed participants to share their thoughts and develop a greater understanding of the other professions. Following the program, students completed a program evaluation. Logistics were managed by the Task Force.Summary of Use : Results from the program evaluations were positive. For example, approximately 92% of participants indicated that the program met its objectives; 95% of the students are now able to describe the roles and responsibilities of other health care professionals in managing patients/clients, and 86% of participants believed that the program was useful to them. Anecdotal comments from students and faculty were complimentary and indicated that follow-up experiences are warranted. Suggestions for future programs were provided as well. Although challenging to identify a time period that all health care students and many faculty members were free to participate, it was manageable.Importance to Members: A university without a college/school of medicine or an academic medical center can provide a cross-disciplinary IPE program for its students in a cost-effective manner. Programs such as this one bring students together to learn about each other and to develop team-based patient-specific plans that can improve care.
