Purpose : A structured clinical education program can lead to improved consistency and quality of clinical education internships for students within an organization. The ability to ensure consistent quality clinical education as Center Coordinators of Clinical Education (CCCEs) of multiple sites across many states is a challenge. A structured program can assist to ensure a baseline level of education is provided by experienced and novice clinical instructors (CIs) and encourage early clinicians to begin supervising students. A comprehensive student clinical education program that is managed by CCCEs and incorporated within all of the companyÕs 64 subacute rehabilitation facilities has been used effectively for full-time clinical internships.Description : A strong team of CCCEs with excellent communication within their own team as well as among all corporate sites and affiliating schools implemented this clinical education program. The program design follows pre-set weekly guidelines and standards including weekly meeting forms for evaluations of the student, as well as provision of student feedback regarding the CI. This program is designed to facilitate a successful learning experience for the student as well as the CI with built-in performance improvement plans for any student with an issue identified as potentially threatening to the success of their affiliation. This structure and progression of student clinical internships ensures that all facilities will adhere to baseline standards in provision of clinical education, and that affiliating academic institutions and students will be aware of the organizationÕs expectations. The partnership between CCCEs, CIs and DCEs within this model allows for 360 degree communication with clearly identified expectations and outcomes leading to excellent full-time clinical education internships for students with consistency regardless of site location or CIÕs level of experience.Summary of Use : Students reported that the comprehensive nature of the clinical education program allowed them to progress in all aspects of clinical care including inter-professional collaboration, administration and critical inquiry. CCCEs and CIs reported that the program is a valuable tool in guiding the clinical education process and ensuring that students are prepared for entry level practice. DCEs recognize this program as a standard to be modeled to ensure consistent, quality clinical education with identified guidelines and expectations for student progression across cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains.Importance to Members: This comprehensive, structured clinical education program is a model for large multi-site organizations. The ability to provide consistent quality clinical education is challenging due to reimbursement and productivity standards, therefore a structured student program will be imperative to encourage clinicians to be CIs as well as promote consistency within organizations that have multiple facility locations.
