Purpose : An innovative, quality improvement and patient safety initiative was developed to address the foundational elements of the Institute of MedicineÕs Triple Aim and integrate the needs of an academic medical center and physical therapy curriculum at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. The goal of the UCSF Mobility is Medicine program was to a create a healthcare culture that promoted mobilization in the acute care setting, while providing clinical learning experiences for first year doctorate physical therapy learners.Description : Mobility is Medicine is a multifactorial initiative at the UCSF Medical Center to create an interprofessional culture that promotes, values and initiates mobilization within the hospital setting. An elective course for first and second year learners (n=40) was developed and initiated to assist the hospital-wide initiative while allowing for learners to practice their professionalism, communication and clinical skills with patients. This elective was a collaboration between the academic faculty, medical center administration, physical therapy, and nursing departments. After this initiative, a 360 degree qualitative feedback assessment was used to gather pertinent reflections from all stakeholders: patients, faculty, therapists, nurses and learners. Patients reported both on the challenges and successes of the student interaction and provided the faculty with iterative feedback that was incorporated in each session. Lastly the students preformed a literature search and created a mobility brochure that could be used as an educational piece for the patients.Summary of Use : The student led Mobility is Medicine initiative was positively received by the hospital, nursing, administrative staff and patients. The student acted as educators on the importance of mobilization, increased awareness of the value of mobilization with other healthcare professionals, and promoted physical therapy in the acute care setting. Based on the success of the elective, the academic faculty will embed this course as a mandatory year-long bi-weekly rotation for all first year learners.Importance to Members: Early workplace learning initiatives designed to address quality improvement and patient safety offer an opportunity for immediate application of professionalism, communication and clinical skills. Most importantly, this program allowed for direct patient feedback, which was incorporated for optimizing student, faculty and staff learning. For hospital organizations, this initiative offers the scaffolding that could be used to develop programs in other hospitals to promote safe and early mobilization in the acute care setting.
