Innovation in Transitioning Students to Successful New Grad Hires in Home Health: Development of a New Graduate Mentorship Program

Purpose: The Home Health Section of the APTA has created a new resource that will help academicians, prospective students/new hires, and home health agencies to be successful in hiring new graduates. The purpose of this session is to share the New Graduate Mentorship Program, a structured program, to foster success of new graduates in home health. Methods and/or Description of Project: A new graduate brings many assets, including current best practices, to any organization. A common myth in home health is that a physical therapist must have 1-2 years of work experience before entering in this practice setting. Challenges may exist when hiring new graduates or therapists with limited experience including selecting the right candidate and providing a structured mentoring program to promote development of clinical decision making. The New Graduate Mentorship Program was developed to foster new graduates to seek employment in home health and for home health agencies to understand what is needed for successful mentoring. The overarching goal is to increase new graduate hires in home health to meet the demand as care shifts to the home. By providing tools for appropriate candidate selection and on-boarding tools for integration, the new graduate will develop clinical decision-making skills necessary for their success, success of the organization and most importantly, provide evidenced-based, best practice for the patients served.Results/Outcomes: Academicians and clinical faculty will discover the keys to success in hiring a new graduate in home health.Conclusions/Relevance to the conference theme: Our Leadership Landscape: Perspectives from the Ground Level to 30,000 Feet: The Home Health Section has been innovative in creating a resource to assist new graduates transition into home health care. As care continues to shift to this setting, the goal is to increase new graduate hires in this part of the continuum.References: 1.
