The ACAPT Education Research Committee and APTA Academy of Education SOE SIG would like to invite ELC attendees to the Education Research Network (ERN) Event at ELC. In accordance with the Excellence Framework, the event will seek to create more focused synergistic collaborations and help individuals connect with those currently doing work in education research. 

Target Audience: Open to anyone who is interested in academic or clinical education research, with a special invitation to DCE/Clinician partners.

  • Only registrants of the 2022 Education Leadership Conference (ELC) can attend this free networking event. Register for ELC here.

The Welcome Reception at ELC '22 in Milwaukee this year (Friday, October 28th from 7-8:30 pm) is dedicated to raising scholarship funds to support success of underrepresented minorities in physical therapy entry-level and post-professional education. One-year research grants are available to assist Academy of Physical Therapy Education members in conducting or planning for research that investigates a question of importance to the advancement of education in physical therapy. Questions related to the education of patients/clients, licensed PTs/PTAs or PT/PTA students will be considered.

Applications are reviewed once yearly for a maximum budget of $25,000. All budgets are rigorously reviewed and require justification for expenses. Grant recipients must account for all expenditures in the final report and return unused funds to the Academy of Physical Therapy Education. Funds cannot be used to attend conferences to disseminate results or for indirect costs or overhead.

Keynote theme: Social Responsibility in Physical Therapy: Are We There?

Keynote title:  Social Responsibilities of a Profession from a Public Health Lens


Dr. Michael Blackwell, DVM, MPH, currently serves as the Director of the Program for Pet Health Equity at the University of Tennessee. He is the founder of AlignCare Health, a One Health interprofessional system to improve access to veterinary care, especially for families with limited means. He earned a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Tuskegee University. He also earned a Master of Public Health degree from Loma Linda University.

Previously, Dr. Blackwell served as:

  • Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee
  • Chief of Staff, Office of the Surgeon General of the United States
  • Deputy Director, Center for Veterinary Medicine, Food and Drug Administration
  • Chief Veterinary Officer, U.S. Public Health Service

During 23 years on active duty with the U.S. Public Health Service, he achieved the rank of Assistant Surgeon General and Rear Admiral. Dr. Blackwell has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and two Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medals. He is the 2020 recipient of the Avanzino Leadership Award and the 2021 recipient of the Senator John Melcher, DVM Leadership in Public Policy Award.
