APTA Academy of Education provides funds to the Foundation of Physical Therapy Research

The APTA Academy of Education is proud to partner with the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research to award funding to their 2022 research grant recipients. The Academy of Education provided the $40,000 granted to Cara Felter, PT, DPT, MPH, of the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Her application was titled, “Physical Therapy After Discharge from the Geriatric Emergency Department: Patient and Clinician Factors Influencing Referrals, Access, and Outcomes.”

“The research funded by these grants will provide evidence that will improve care for the patients and clients physical therapists serve,” said Foundation President, Paul A. Rockar, Jr., PT, DPT, MS, FAPTA. “Physical therapy research is critical to the future of the profession, and thanks to the support of our dedicated donors, the Foundation is able to continue funding groundbreaking research and promising researchers, improving outcomes and treatments and advancing the profession.”

The fellowship is a year-long blended (online and on-site) curricular learning program that addresses the current and future needs of the physical therapy profession and the profession’s academic community. Acceptance into the program is by application, requires the support of the academic institution, and is intended for novice (up to seven years’ experience) and emerging academic administrators. The fellowship features high-caliber faculty for teaching experiences, experienced academic administrators to provide mentoring, and peer networking to facilitate the development of future mentors and leaders.

The program continues to grow, with the 2022-2023 cohort being the largest to date with 31 fellows. This award-winning program has developed more than 165 fellows since its creation in 2009.

The APTA Academy of Education will operate the program beginning with admissions and enrollment for the 2023-2024 cohort. “This program is a great example of APTA demonstrating leadership through the development of the first ever non-clinical fellowship in physical therapy,” said APTA Senior Vice President of Scientific Affairs Tara Jo Manal, PT, DPT, FAPTA. “Transitioning this program to the APTA Academy of Education will ensure ongoing success and progress.”

This strategic transition also better aligns with best practices for fellowship programs, as it increases the distance between the sponsoring program, the APTA Academy of Education, and the accrediting organization, the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education, which is a related organization of APTA.

“We are enthusiastic about transferring the prestigious Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership to the APTA Academy of Education,” said APTA Academy of Education President Pamela K. Levangie. “Bringing the fellowship into our fold will support our growing collection of resources that serve our mission to ‘Advance physical therapists and physical therapist assistants as educators.’ We look forward to exploring ways to build on the foundation so capably constructed by APTA to enhance the experience for future fellows. We will also consider how the program's assets can be leveraged to support professional development opportunities for our academic and clinical physical therapy educators.”

 

 
 
 

The American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) and the APTA Academy of Education worked collaboratively to develop a glossary of physical therapy clinical education terms for both PTs and physical therapist assistants (PTAs).

The initial glossary was developed after a review of the physical therapy literature, extensive discussion and debate by the ACAPT Common Terminology Panel, and engagement of key stakeholders within the physical therapy clinical education community. The glossary is divided into major categories and, as applicable, definitions are referenced.

Keshrie Naidoo, PT, DPT, EdD to take over the leadership position

 

(Marietta, GA, October 2022) The APTA Academy of Education is excited to announce that Keshrie Naidoo, PT, DPT, EdD, will assume the Editor-in-Chief position of the Journal of Physical Therapy Education beginning in January 2023. Dr. Naidoo will oversee the journal’s strategy implementation, review process, and manuscript production.

 

Dr. Naidoo currently serves as a Distinguished Teaching Assistant Professor, Director of Academic Curriculum, and Director of the Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP) in Boston, MA. Naidoo holds a Doctor of Education from John Hopkins University, and a Doctor in Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She is also a recent recipient of the IHP’s New Investigator Award.

 

Regarding her goals for the Journal, Naidoo will strive “to advance Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) in physical therapy education and to promote and support education research around supporting minoritized students to reach their highest academic outcomes.”

 

Since 2020, Naidoo has published ten manuscripts, submitted six grant applications, and revised four book chapters. She is passionate about education research, writing and mentoring novice researchers throughout the publication process.

The Clinical Education SIG, National Consortium of Clinical Educators, and PTA Educators SIG hosted a Town Hall Meeting on June 27th at 8:00 p.m. EST.
