Get to know President Chalee Engelhard PT, EdD

Academy of Education News,

What made you get into Physical Therapy?

My grandparents. They were a strong influence in my life. They told amazing stories. As I watched them age, I wanted to do all I could to help them age well.

Why did you join the Academy of Education?

I had heard that the Academy was a huge resource for academicians and clinicians. It is so true! The folks in the SIGs were so very welcoming and the resources available such as faculty development and networking was what I needed to be a successful faculty member.

What was your first job?

My first job was a concession stand employee. It’s where I learned the skill of microwaving pizzas, hot dogs and hamburgers.

What is your schooling and where do you work now?

I earned my BHS in PT from the University of Kentucky; an MBA from Thomas More University and my EdD from the University of Cincinnati. I am a graduate of the Fellowship in Higher Education (was the Education Leadership Institute when I went through it). I currently work at the University of Cincinnati. I have been here for over 17 years.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

I like to do anything outside. I go on walks, play tennis, and garden. I just started learning pickleball and am finding that I’m chasing yet another yellow ball. I also enjoy a good movie and hanging out with my family and grand-dogs.

Tell us about your family.

I’ve been married 36 years August 1st. My husband is amazing! He’s a PTA. I have two children and both are engaged. My son is a PT (Graduated in 2022) and will be married next year. My daughter just graduated with her Master’s in Social Work and is getting married August 4th. I have two grand-dogs. One is a lab/coonhound mix and the other is a collie mix.

Who is someone you look up to?

My mom. She taught me so many life lessons. She was strong, determined, fun-loving, tough and always put her family first. She passed away in 2018. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her.

What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?

My family. They come first in my life and am happiest when I’m with them.
