PT, DPT, PhD

Professional Bio

I received a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Utah, MA and PhD in Anatomy from the University of California at Berkeley, post-doctoral training at UC Berkeley and San Francisco, and t-DPT from Chapman University. I served on the faculty of UCSF prior to Chapman University, where I am a tenured full professor. My area of research is in neuroplasticity and stroke recovery and I am Project Scientist on inter-disciplinary stroke research teams at UC Irvine and other universities. I have taught anatomy to post-professional clinicians and students in several areas of the health sciences, primarily PT students, for the past thirty-five years and I have published in the area of anatomy education, beyond my primary area of research. In addition to developing anatomy curricula for several programs and teaching anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, and histology, I have mentored dozens of PT anatomy faculty and thousands of students over the years. I also developed and coordinate an international clinical rotation in Costa Rica and established an inter-professional, integrated clinical education community outreach program known as Stroke Boot Camp. In addition to serving in several leadership positions at the district, chapter, and national level in the APTA, I have served in several leadership positions at my University, including as Faculty Senate President during the pandemic. Although I have been grateful to receive awards for teaching, research, and service from my home institution and the APTA, what I enjoy most is working with and supporting students and faculty colleagues.
