Membership Information

The APTA Academy of Education, one of the oldest sections of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA),  is committed to advancing physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and physical therapy students in their roles as educators in academic, clinical and community settings. 

  • Membership in the Academy of Education is processed as an add-on to your APTA membership.  APTA membership is required in order to become an Academy of Education member. 
  • If you do not qualify for APTA membership and would like to become a member of the Academy of Education, please see the qualifications for membership under the Interprofessional Partners Program information.

Membership Types

Membership benefits include:

  • Educational programming and research posters/platform at the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) and the Education Leadership Conference (ELC)
  • Reduced registration rates for members at Academy sponsored conferences including the annual Education Leadership Conference (ELC).
  • Membership in one or more Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at no additional expense.

  • Representation on educational issues within and to various APTA components, task forces, external strategic partners, APTA's House of Delegates, and the APTA Board of Directors.

The APTA Academy of Education is seeking to partner with educators outside the United States and other professionals within the US who do not qualify for APTA membership. With more than 3,000 current members, APTA Academy of Education is one of the largest specialty sections of APTA. APTA Academy of Education is committed to meeting the needs of all persons concerned with the progress, growth and development of education in physical therapy. Section members recognize that education in physical therapy is a multi-faceted process including didactic and clinical components which are implemented in a variety of learning environments. This makes the Interprofessional Partners Program of APTA Academy of Education the ideal choice for professional physical therapy educators.

How Can You Get Involved in Other Academy Activities?

The Academy has many opportunities to get involved - we encourage you to offer your time and expertise! The rewards gained from involvement with fellow physical therapist educators will benefit your career growth and provide personal gratification. We welcome the opportunity to acquaint you with our Section!

Per the APTA Partnership Program Policy [BOD Y11-03-12-40], APTA Academy of Education provides an INDIVIDUAL Interprofessional (IP) Partner Program opportunity for those who are not eligible for any regular members category (per APTA policies on membership) and who want to be partners. IP Partners may include:

  • Faculty teaching in a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant program
  • International physiotherapists practicing outside the United States
  • Rehabilitation providers (physicians, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, respiratory therapists, health care administrators)
  • Licensed physical therapists’ assistants who did not graduate from a CAPTE-approved academic education program, and
  • Others who can demonstrate an identified connection with the profession and/or Association

Business entities, corporations or practices (both profit and non-profit) are not eligible for the individual partners program and may not participate as entities in APTE Partners Program.

An Interprofessional Partner Program member may be dismissed from participation for actions or behavior that are not in keeping with Code of Ethics, Core Values, or other standards and guidelines of the APTA or the Academy.

How Can You Join as a Partner?
The annual Interprofessional Partner fee is $55, covering a single year of benefits (January 1-December 31), which must be submitted by December 15 of each year. This fee is required annually for each successive renewal of your Partner status.
