Professional Bio

Dr. Birkmeier is an Assistant Professor and the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at The George Washington University (GW). In addition to her role as DCE, she is an APTA Level 1 and Level 2 Credentialed Clinical Trainer, an active member in the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of Clinical Education, an institutional member of the National Consortium of Clinical Education, and an active member in a variety of special interest groups in the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy (APPT) and the Academy of Physical Therapy Education, including the Clinical Education SIG. She also has multiple papers in publication focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning and presented nationally and internationally on topics pertaining to pediatric rehabilitation and educational strategies within the classroom and clinic. She was an ACAPT Common Terminology Panel member and served as chair of the Pediatric Clinical Education Toolkit Task Force for the Academic and Clinical Educator SIG in the APPT. The Pediatric CI Toolkit went live in early 2020 and provides CIs with multiple resources to enhance their clinical teaching in pediatrics and beyond. She is a board certified pediatric clinical specialist and currently practices at Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC with her primary service delivery to children in the inpatient and outpatient setting who have a history of prematurity, neuromotor dysfunction, and lower extremity biomechanical alignment issues.
