This course will detail the characteristics and learning preferences of current physical therapy students and provide support for the integration of evidence-based teaching and cooperative learning strategies such as team-based learning in healthcare professions. Presenters will explain the components of team-based learning and share best practices and pitfalls when incorporating this engaging instructional approach. At the conclusion, presenters will provide guidelines for selection and examples of didactic content that may be effectively taught via team-based learning.
Learning Objectives:
After this presentation, learners will be able to:
- Identify the benefits and challenges associated with designing and implementing a progressive and sequential interprofessional education (IPE).
- Describe strategies to foster collaboration between academic and clinical faculty members to enhance interprofessional Physical Therapy didactic education and clinical education experiences.
- Create an action plan to evolve their respective IPE curriculum.

Kathleen (Katie) Shroyer, PT, DPT, CBIS
Dr Katie Shroyer is the founding Director of Clinical Education and Assistance Professor in the DPT program at Carlow
University. She currently teaches Critical Thinking Within Inter-Professional Framework I, II, and III to a multidisciplinary
class including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and physician assistant students. This
three-course sequence focuses on both the introduction of the foundational principles of interprofessional collaborative
care of values/ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork as well as application of the core
principles with case scenarios. In addition to this course series, she has developed and taught the course Foundations of
Physical Therapy, Clinical Experience Readiness and Integrated Clinical Experience.
Katie has over 20 years of experience of physical therapy practice spanning across acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient,
home based, school based, and early intervention settings. She has a deep passion for collaborating with clients, their
caregivers, and other healthcare practitioners to empower individuals to lead an active and balanced lifestyle and
achieve their full potential.
Kunal Bhanot, PT, PhD
Dr. Bhanot is the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at Carlow University, Pittsburgh, PA. He holds a
Doctor of Philosophy in Orthopedics and Sports Science and is a Fellow in Higher Education Leadership of the
APTA Academy of Education. He has been an educator for several years, demonstrating a strong teaching, program
development, professional service, and research record. He has co-authored several publications and peer reviewed
abstracts and presented educational sessions in previous ELC, CSM, and other national conferences.
Dr. Peter Haywiser PT, DPT, SCCE
Dr. Peter Haywiser is a senior physical therapist, clinical instructor, and site coordinator of clinical education in the
Pittsburgh, PA area. He obtained his Doctorate of Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Science in Biology, and Bachelor of
Science in Health Sciences from Duquesne University. He has proficiency in practicing physical therapy (PT) in the acute
care setting. He demonstrates adaptability and time management by completing all administrative duties while
maintaining a full time PT patient caseload and providing quality patient experiences and care services daily. He
demonstrates leadership by mentoring all staff physical therapists and physical therapist assistants within his department
via completing their new hire orientation in addition to supervising and running daily PT department operations in the
absence of PT manager.
Dr. Haywiser facilitates clinical education teaching of PT students in his daily practice as a clinical instructor and site
coordinator of clinical education (SCCE). He has obtained the APTA advanced clinical instructor training in 2020 and has
been a clinical instructor for the last 11 years educating 1-2 physical therapy students each year in acute care physical
therapy practice. For the last 7 years, he has organized and coordinated 20-25 physical therapy and physical therapy
assistant students at AGH for clinical education. He has demonstrated his leadership by actively developing all the clinical
instructors within the AGH PT department, leading bi-yearly clinical development meetings and developing a premier PT
clinical education facility.
Kelly Kraynick SPT
Kelly Kraynick, a second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Carlow University, has embraced the value of
interprofessional collaboration in shaping her educational journey. Throughout her first year, she actively participated in
three interprofessional courses. Working alongside physician assistant, occupational therapy, and speech language
pathology students. Kelly has discovered the transformative power of teamwork in
healthcare to foster partnerships and mutual respect in pursuit of holistic patient care. In the summer of 2024, Kelly
completed a clinical affiliation at Allegheny Health Network, Allegheny General Hospital where she had the opportunity
to implement the principles of interprofessional collaboration to empower individuals to achieve their full potential
through collaborative practice.
