Clinical reasoning has been recognized as a critical attribute in physical therapy. Several publications and professional organizations support the development of clinical reasoning from entry-level to residency, fellowship, and beyond. However, evidence-based guidelines to develop clinical reasoning have not been established in the profession. The purpose of this webinar is to present the results of a recently completed systematic review that investigated the effects of educational interventions designed to develop physical therapist learners’ clinical reasoning across the full continuum of professional development. The authors of the systematic review will share both quantitative and qualitative results. To the authors’ knowledge, this review was the first to investigate the effects of educational interventions that aim to enhance physical therapist learners’ clinical reasoning. The session will primarily focus on learners in entry-level didactic education; however, other phases of the physical therapist learner continuum, such as residency/fellowship, will be briefly reviewed. The session will include brainstorming opportunities for participants to identify how the interventions with positive learning outcomes, as identified in the systematic review, can be applied to various educational settings and how high-quality research initiatives can be developed to facilitate further research on developing physical therapist learners’ clinical reasoning.

After this presentation, learners will be able to:

  1. 1. Discuss the quantitative and qualitative results from the systematic review that investigated the effects of educational interventions designed to develop physical therapist learners’ clinical reasoning across the full continuum of professional development.

    2. Identify valid and reliable outcome measures to evaluate changes in clinical reasoning among physical therapist learners.

    3. Describe elements of rigor needed for high-quality research projects focused on educational interventions for clinical reasoning.

Tobi Baldwin, PT, DPT, EdD
Dr. Tobi Baldwin is the program director and chair of the developing Brooks Rehabilitation
Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL. She has over 20
years of experience in physical therapy education as a professor and administrator. She has
presented nationally and published on the topics of clinical reasoning, curriculum development,
and formative assessment. Dr. Baldwin received her physical therapy degree from the University
of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. She also holds a master’s degree in exercise science from
California University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in education from Walden University. Dr.
Baldwin is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy.

Vicki LaFay, PT, DPT, PhD
Dr. Vicki LaFay is the DPT Program Director/Chair at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY. Her professional degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Ithaca College, a transitional DPT degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University, and a PhD in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. LaFay is active within the APTA Academy of Education; she currently serves the Academy as the President-Elect and previously served as the Nominating Committee Chair and a member of the APTA Academy of Education Task Force on Credentialing Physical Therapy Educators.  Dr. LaFay has had additional leadership opportunities within the profession on the ACAPT Reference Committee and the ACAPT Clinical Reasoning Curricular and Assessment Consortium Teaching Compendium Task Force, and prior roles on the ACAPT Strategic Initiative Clinical Education Terminology Dissemination Panel, and ACAPT National Consortium of Clinical Educator (NCCE) Nominating Committee.  Dr. LaFay serves as the APTA NY Practice Committee chair and has served as an APTA NY delegate to the House of Delegates. She maintains clinical practice in home health and a consultant practice focused on ergonomic assessment, injury prevention, and worksite wellness, with experience over her 30+ years of clinical practice that spans practice settings and patient/populations. As a lifelong resident of a rural community in upstate NY, Dr. LaFay is committed to population health needs that impact medically underserved communities. She began her academic career as a Director of Clinical Education and continues her passion for clinical education through her scholarly agenda. Dr. LaFay has published and presented nationally, with a scholarly agenda focused on PT student performance, clinical instructor teaching effectiveness, clinical education terminology, and clinical education collaboration and leadership.

Mark Erickson, PT, MA, DScPT, OCS, CFP, CSCS
Dr. Mark Erickson has been teaching entry-level and post-professional physical therapy for 33 years with a focus on integrating across content domains to provide better care to patients. He currently holds an Associate Professor position at Florida Gulf Coast University and his areas of teaching expertise include orthopedics, clinical reasoning, manual therapy, kinesiology, body awareness training, and exercise science. Dr. Erickson's scholarship centers on clinical reasoning, comprehensive and holistic physical therapy, The Feldenkrais Method, PT education pedagogy, and the performing arts. He has presented at local, regional, and national conferences, and has maintained an active private practice throughout his career.

Kara Kobal, PT, DPT, DHSc, PCS
Dr. Kara Kobal is a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and the Program Director of the Residential DPT option. Dr. Kobal has received doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (DPT) and Drexel University (DHSc). In addition to her many years of faculty experience, including both teaching and residency responsibilities, Dr. Kobal has many years of experience as a practicing clinician. She is a board certified pediatric clinical specialist and has worked as a physical therapist in a variety of settings, including acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, home health and school-based physical therapy. Dr. Kobal serves the profession and her community through a variety of ways, including 15+ years as a board member for APTA-PA , involvement in APTA Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency Program SIG, serving as a Clinical Director of FUNfitness for Special Olympics Pennsylvania and, as Girl Scout troop leader. Dr. Kobal’s research focuses on physical therapy educational research, especially clinical reasoning. Dr. Kobal is passionate about the profession of physical therapy as well as teaching the next generation of practicing clinicians

Jacklyn Brechter, PT, DPT, PhD
Dr. Jacki Brechter has served as a provider, faculty, researcher and administrator in physical therapy and education for over 30 years. She holds a PhD in Biokinesiology (with an emphasis in Biomechanics) from the University of Southern California and BS and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degrees in Physical Therapy from California State University Long Beach and Chapman University, respectively. Her clinical experience is focused on Orthopedic and Sports physical therapy, with a history of managing chronic pain complaints. Her research interests include efficacy of physical therapy - including education and clinical reasoning, biomechanics and movement analysis. She is a long-term active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) particularly with the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT).
