Description
The final webinar of the 2022-2023 PTAE SIG Webinar Series will be held on April 6 from 7:00 PM EST to 8:00 PM EST. Jon Duellman PT, DPT and Jennifer Biggs, PT, PhD, MPH, CWS will present Knowledge to Action: Applying an Ecological Model of Health to DPT and PTA Education. In order to improve the health of society and work towards health equity, health care providers must address all factors that contribute to health. Many health professions are recognizing the importance of addressing health disparities as part of the professional curriculum. One strategy to improve health equity is to introduce the social determinants of health (SDOH) into the curriculum with the goal of describing factors that perpetuate health inequity. Simply describing the SDOH, however, is not enough to produce the social change necessary for health equity. In addition to the what, educators must challenge students to focus on the why including the unequal distribution of resources and power which caused and perpetuated the inequities.
This webinar will describe how one PTA and DPT program are developing a curricular thread designed to allow students to gain the necessary knowledge and ultimately learn the skills needed for intervention to address health disparities and empower students to have an ecological approach to health and healthcare.
