Item/Job/Service Description 

UNG is conducting a search for the new Department Head of Physical Therapy. As the chief administrative and academic officer of the Department of Physical Therapy (DPT), the department head has the authority and responsibility for the delivery of academic programs in accordance with departmental, college and university strategic plans, hiring and evaluation of department personnel, to include faculty and staff, and budgeting and resource management. This authority is subject to approval by the Dean and the Provost. As a member of the College administration, the department head coordinates departmental activity with the activities of other units in the College and the University and, in collaboration with other members of the administration, assists in the development and implementation of college initiatives. This position will report to the Dean of the College of Health Sciences & Professions (CHSP) or the Dean's determined designee.

• Department Leadership o Work with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long-term vision for the department that is consistent with the departmental, college and university missions

o Assess department's progress in meeting department, college and university goals

o Make recommendations regarding departmental programs, policies, procedures, and practices

o Ensure departmental compliance with College, University, System, State, and Council for Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) rules and regulations

• Department Curriculum

o Coordinate the development of classes from conceptualization to approval by college and university curriculum committees

o Complete scheduled comprehensive program reviews in accordance with USG regulations

o Complete Program Assessment and assessment of courses offered in the core

o Communicate and collaborate with program coordinators as appropriate

o Communicate and collaborate with other entities across campus regarding the curriculum (University Curriculum Committee, Provost/VPAA office, Academic Standards Committee, Graduate Council)

o Coordinate the submission of reports required by accreditation and sanctioning agencies including the Southern Association for the Accreditation of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Board of Regents (BOR), and CAPTE

o Initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate and in accordance with department, college and university strategic plans

• Department Operations

o Manage daily operations of the department

o Oversee the development and submission of class schedules o Review and revise the university catalog regarding matters related to departmental requirements and schedules

o Monitor course registrations and make appropriate adjustments in course schedules and instructor assignments in cooperation with the Dean's Office

o Review and approve/deny grade change requests

o Coordinate implementation of academic policies and regulations

o Promote consistent communication and engagement of faculty and staff in the department for the development of curriculum, strategic planning, and department policies and procedures

o Communicate departmental activities and concerns to the Dean's Office and to the larger campus

o Communicate university and college activities and concerns to the departmental membership

o Communicate policies of state agencies (Board of Regents) regarding academic policy matters, legislation, regulations and requirements to department

• Budgeting

o Manage resources for the advancement of departmental and program vision and mission

o Develop and regularly monitor the budget for department

o Review and approve requests for funding for departmental projects

o Review and approve departmental expenditures in compliance with college, university, and state of fiscal practices

o Collaborate with Dean of CHSP and the departmental faculty in developing and prioritizing annual budget requests.

• Personnel

o Administer the hiring and recruitment of full time and part time faculty and staff

o Evaluate full time and part time faculty and staff to include conducting Annual Performance Reviews

o As part of the Annual Review process, guide faculty in the construction of a professional development plan (PDP) outlining goals in teaching, scholarship, and service

o Evaluate all pre-tenure, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure applications

o Review and recommend, as appropriate, department faculty development awards and grants to the Dean

o Coordinate and approve faculty travel and reimbursement of travel expenses

o Recommend compensation increases, as appropriate, for department personnel based on evaluation and contribution to department, college, university, and community in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service

o Serve as appropriate in appeals process regarding faculty and staff grievances

o Supervise student personnel

o Coordinate course load scheduling to include flexible scheduling to meet the demands of the program while also facilitating faculty research, service and scholarship

o Cooperate and collaborate with Human Resources on faculty and staff issues related to claims of harassment requests for Family Medical Leave, disability and illness, and other similar issues

• Students

o Coordinate recruiting of students in department programs

o Coordinate student's advisement and review of degree progress documents

o Evaluate student transfer credit

o Review student appeals o Meet with students, as appropriate, regarding concerns about classes, faculty, and policies

o Cooperate with the Student Accessibility Office on issues related to accommodations with the students

o Review and recommend requests and applications for students travel

o Coordinate departmental/program recruitment/retention activities with faculty and Admissions staff

o Coordinate department participation in Nighthawk Preview Days and University recruitment events

o Coordinate departmental participation in orientation/registration of new students

o Review and approve/deny course override requests

o Review and approve/deny requests for transient credit

o Provide continuous and ongoing evaluation of student success efforts in conjunction with departmental faculty and staff, the Dean's office, and other university departments (advisement, student success & engagement, Dean of Students, University College, etc.)

• Management and Department Recordkeeping

o Supervise the maintenance of departmental records

o Ensure that departmental documents and websites are regularly updated

• Meetings o Schedule and lead departmental meetings

o Participate in CHSP Leadership Team meetings as scheduled o Serve on departmental, college, and university committees in accordance with UNG policy

• Faculty Responsibilities

o Participate in research and scholarly activities in the discipline

o Participate and assist department faculty in college, university, and community service activities as appropriate.

• A physical therapist who holds an active, unencumbered physical therapy license in Georgia. An earned academic doctoral degree - PhD preferred

• Has a minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience, with a minimum of three years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a CAPTE accredited entry-level physical therapist education program

• Demonstrates a history of leadership experience in academia

• Documented strong performance in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service
